Lake Throckmorton
The original Lake Throckmorton was constructed in September of
1918 to provide a water supply for the city of Throckmorton. The dam was
raised in 1940 to increase the lakes storage capacity. In 1954 a
sedimentation survey was made by the Soil Conservation Service to determine the
original and present capacity of the lake. In that survey the lake had a
surface area of 139 acres and had an original capacity of 1,947 acre feet of
storage at spillway elevation. In 1954 the capacity had been reduced to
1,829 acre feed of storage from sedimentation. Maximum water depth was
originally 26.4 feed in 1918 and 24.0 feet in 1954. In the survey that was
done by the Natural Resources Conservation Service on July7, 2000 the storage
capacity was found to be 1,584 acre feet and a maximum depth of 21.0 feet.
At that time the lake level was 12.4 feet below the emergency spillway elevation
and was at 16.7% capacity. The lake level has been monitored monthly to
determine evaporation rates and use. The chart below shows the data
collected.
